Researching the jobs that are available?

Just thought I would do my first post for the blog with a great link to a research tool helping you find out what jobs would interest you.  Seems that researching the labour market (what jobs are what and what's involved, salary, popularity and how to ultimately get it), is really important nowadays to find that perfect position

Take a look and see what you think:

How to get the most out of University Open Days

Visiting universities is essential if you want to make the right choice for you!
Everyone's tastes and opinions are different and this is why it is important you check out the universities that interest you, to decide if this is right for you.

What happens on an Open Day?

You will be shown around, and you can look at the facilities such as accommodation. Usually at an Open Day, you will be guided by current students, which will give you a good opportunity to speak to someone about their experiences of this university.

*TOP TIP* - Ask questions! This will help you understand what it is really like to study/ live there and ensure you make the right choice when choosing which university you'd like to apply to!

Plan the day

Universities tend to publish what is happening on the open day on their website- check this out before you go.
Some universities ask you to register before you visit (as there can be a limit of numbers).

Otherwise, make sure you pick up a guide on arrival and plan which buildings / accommodation you'd like to see and what subject areas you'd like to visit.

Make sure you plan enough time to get there and think about whether you want to go alone or take someone else along with you. Just remember this is YOUR decision.

Make the most of the day by seeing everything you need, to make an informed decision regarding your future intentions.

*TOP TIP* Make a note of questions you have! E.G. about the course/s you're interested in or accommodation/ finance questions.  Write down your observations to remind you of what you thought later.

After the Open Day- what now?

Look back at your thoughts and reflect on the day..

For example:
Can you see yourself studying there?
Did the course really interest you?
How was the accommodation?

If you have more questions or you have questions you forgot to ask- give the student recruitment office a call. They will be more than happy to help!

When are the Open Days?

You can find out when these are by looking on the individual websites of each University, or look through their current prospectus.

Alternatively UCAS has a page showing all open day information at

www.ucas.com/choosingcourses/choosinguni/opendays

Another great website is http://www.opendays.com

Blackpool Sixth Form has organised its own range of visits, which you can see in the last blog.

It is important you really think about the universities you'd wish to apply for.

* Reminder* You can apply for 5 different universities through UCAS - please choose 5 you would happily attend.

As always if you need help and guidance deciding on University, please come and see the Futures Team.

Thank you

Open Days at Universities

Hi everyone

Our Upper Sixth students go on study leave next week- so we wish you all lots of luck on your summer exams and look forward to seeing where you are all headed in your futures.

It's also that time of year when our Lower Sixth students begin to decide on what option will be best for them for when they leave college in 2014.

it is important to go and have a look around Universities to keep this in mind as one of your options for when you leave college...

The college is putting on Trips for students to particular Universities, so if you'd like to go on any of these, please go and see Student finance in Ribble Building, to obtain a Permission Letter.
Each trip costs £5.00 Each.

Tuesday 18th June- Leeds University
Wednesday 19th June- Manchester Metropolitan University

Friday 21st June- Liverpool University/ Manchester University

Tuesday 25th June- Lancaster University
Wednesday 26th June- Huddersfield University

If you'd like any further information, as always please come and see the Futures Team in the
